The A465 Heads of the Valleys road passes Hirwaun, a few miles north-west of the town. West of Hirwaun it has long been dual carriageway down the Vale of Neath to Junction 43 of the M4 at Llandarcy, which is the route we take from Swansea. East of Hirwaun, the last section to Dowlais Top was finished in May 2025, so the whole road is now dual carriageway. If you break down on it, tell us which junction you last passed and whether you were heading east or west.
The A4059 is the valley's own road. From Hirwaun it runs down through Aberdare and Mountain Ash, mostly on a relief road that avoids the town centres, to meet the A470 at Abercynon. North of Hirwaun it climbs over open moorland past Penderyn, reaching about 450 metres before dropping to the A470 near the Beacons Reservoir. In winter that northern stretch sees snow and ice, and there's little shelter.
Two other mountain roads matter. The A4233 leaves Aberdare as Maerdy Road and climbs over to Maerdy in the Rhondda Fach. The A4061 runs from Hirwaun over the Rhigos to Treherbert. Both are exposed, steep and winding. If you've stopped up there, get off the road if you can, tell us the nearest landmark, and keep warm while you wait.
In the valley, Ysbyty Cwm Cynon on New Road in Mountain Ash replaced the old local hospitals in 2012. The nearest major emergency department is at Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil, beside the A465. Many streets in Aberdare, Trecynon and Cwmbach are steep terraces with parking both sides, so let us know if the truck may struggle to get close. We can take the car to a local garage, home, or down to Swansea or Cardiff.

Get the car off the road if you possibly can, put your hazards on, and if it's safe wait away from the carriageway. Tell us which side of the mountain you're on and any landmark nearby. My street is a steep terrace with cars both sides. Can you still reach my car?
Usually, but tell us about the street when you call. If a flatbed can't get alongside, the driver may winch from the end of the street or meet you somewhere wider. If it's only a flat battery, a jump start or new battery at the kerb means the car doesn't have to move.
