Vehicle recovery in Ebbw Vale

The A465 passes the top of the town and is now dual carriageway all the way from Abergavenny to Neath, after a long upgrade finished in 2025. Between Tredegar and Dowlais Top the road reaches its highest signposted point, about 1,350 feet. East of Ebbw Vale, the road runs past Brynmawr, sometimes called the highest town in Wales at between 1,250 and 1,500 feet. Snow, ice and hill fog are all part of winter up here. If you've broken down on the A465, tell us the last junction and whether you were heading for Abergavenny or Merthyr.

The valley road down from the A465 is the A4046, which runs through the town as Station Road and Park Road and then south as Cwm Road. The A4281 follows College Road and Steel Works Road. The town is long and narrow, stepping down the valley floor, with terraces climbing the sides; tell us if your street is steep or tight.

Ebbw Vale's steelworks was once the largest in Europe. After it closed, the site was cleared and rebuilt, and by 2015 it held a new hospital, Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan, along with a college campus, school and leisure centre. The 1992 Garden Festival grounds are on the south side of the old works. Ebbw Vale Town station is the terminus of the Ebbw Valley Railway, with Ebbw Vale Parkway further down.

From Swansea, the fastest way here is the A465 itself, the same road you're most likely to break down on. If you've broken down on a slip road or junction on the A465, say which town it's signed for. We can take a recovered vehicle to a local garage, home, or down to Newport, Cardiff or Swansea, at the price agreed before the truck is sent.

Recovering something other than a car

Jump start in Ebbw Vale

At this height, winter mornings are colder than down in Newport or Swansea, and a weak battery that coped in October can fail in January. Cars parked on the slopes in Beaufort or Rassau, or left all day at the hospital or the college, are the usual cases. If the engine clicks or cranks slowly, a jump start is the first thing to try. Tell us the street or car park, the make and model, and whether it's a hybrid or has stop-start. If ice or snow is making the street hard to reach, say so. Once it's running, a good drive along the A465 helps put some charge back.

Battery replacement in Ebbw Vale

If you need a jump two mornings running, the battery is on its way out, and the height of the town makes winter harder on it. We can arrange a replacement outside a house in Tredegar, on a drive in Brynmawr, or in the car park at Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan. Give us the registration so we bring a matching battery. Stop-start cars can't take a standard one, and some need coding. A battery that's only a year old and still dying may point to a charging fault instead. Let us know where the car is parked and how easy it is to reach the front of it, especially on the steep terraces.

Flat tyre & fuel in Ebbw Vale

A flat on the A465 is a truck job, not a roadside wheel change beside traffic doing 70. Get onto the verge or behind the barrier and call us. On the A4046 down the valley, pull off where the road is wide enough and get everyone out on the pavement side. On a street in town or at a supermarket car park, a mobile tyre change where you've stopped is usually fine. Run out of fuel on the high ground? A fuel callout gets you to the nearest open forecourt. Mention whether there's a spare in the boot or only an inflation kit, and whether the road is icy where you've stopped.

Ebbw Vale recovery & roadside FAQs

I've broken down on the A465 near Ebbw Vale in the snow. What should I do?

Get as far left as you can with hazards on. If there's a safe verge or behind a barrier, get everyone out and away from the traffic, and keep warm. Tell us the last junction and which way you were heading. If snow or heavy traffic means you can't safely leave a live lane on the A465, stay belted in and phone 999.

Do you really cover Ebbw Vale from Swansea?

Yes. The Heads of the Valleys road runs from near Swansea to Ebbw Vale, and the whole area is on our home patch. We send our own team or the nearest available truck in our network, whichever makes more sense on the day.

My car won't start in the car park at Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan. Can you help?

Yes. Tell us where the car is parked and give us the make and model. A jump start or a new battery fitted in the bay usually solves it without moving the car.

Can a recovery truck get up my steep street in Ebbw Vale?

Usually, but tell us about the street, the parking and any tight bends. If a flatbed can't get alongside, the driver may winch from the end of the road or meet you where there's more room.

How do you price a recovery from Ebbw Vale?

We ask where the car is, what it is, whether it rolls and where it's going, then give you one figure. You agree it before we dispatch, and you don't need to be a member.
