The M4 ends at Junction 49, Pont Abraham services, and from there the road carries on north-west as the A48 dual carriageway. It finishes at Pensarn, just south of the town, where it meets the A40. The A40 forms the eastern bypass of the town as a dual carriageway, opened in 1984. The A484 crosses the river on Carmarthen Bridge and climbs through the town on Priory Street and Bronwydd Road. The A485 runs out along Dolgwili Road, home to Glangwili General Hospital. The railway station is on the south side of the Towy, and St Catherine's Walk has a multi-storey car park in the town centre.
