Vehicle recovery in Reading
The M4 from Junction 3 to Junction 12 is an all-lane-running smart motorway, finished in December 2022. The old hard shoulder is now a running lane, and there are 34 emergency areas along the scheme, on average about 1.3 miles apart. Reading's two main exits are Junction 11, where the A33 heads north into the centre and south for Basingstoke, and Junction 12 at Theale, where the A4 comes in from the west. If a warning light comes on, aim for the next emergency area or exit rather than slowing in lane one. Stopped in a live lane? Stay belted in with hazards on and call 999.
The A33 relief road runs up from Junction 11 past Green Park, the Select Car Leasing Stadium and Kennet Island to meet the Inner Distribution Road. The IDR itself is a 2.4-mile, mostly dual-carriageway loop round the centre, with junctions for the A329, A4155, A33 and A327 coming close together. Missing your turn is easy and stopping is hard, so if a car dies on it, tell us the nearest junction or landmark and which direction you were going.
For the shops, the Oracle has two car parks: Riverside, with about 1,600 spaces over seven floors, and the smaller two-floor Holy Brook. Broad Street Mall has its own 720-space multi-storey at the west end of Broad Street. The Royal Berkshire Hospital's main entrance is on Craven Road, where the multi-storey is; the North Block car park is reached from London Road.
Reading has no Clean Air Zone, so there's no charge for driving a repaired car back through town. Its emissions-based charges apply only to on-street parking. A recovered vehicle can go to a garage in Tilehurst, your drive in Woodley or a dealer up the M4, priced in full before we dispatch.

I've broken down on the M4 near Reading and there isn't a hard shoulder. What do I do?
If the car can still move, get into an emergency area or off at the next junction. They're about a mile and a quarter apart on average along this stretch. If you've stopped in a running lane, stay in the car with your belt on and hazards flashing, and call 999. Once you're safe, call or WhatsApp 07944 820302 with your direction and the junctions you're between. If the car has been moved by National Highways or the police, we'll collect it from there.
My car is on an upper floor of the Oracle Riverside car park. Can a truck get up there?
Not usually, because a flatbed is too tall for most multi-storey ceilings. A flat battery can normally be dealt with in the bay by a jump start or a replacement. If the car really does need to be taken away, it may have to be brought down to ground level first. Tell us the car park, floor and fault and we'll plan it.
Can you recover my car to a dealer outside Reading?
