Three M5 junctions matter here. Junction 11 takes the A40 Golden Valley bypass to the north and east of Gloucester, Cheltenham and Gloucestershire Airport at Staverton. Junction 11a, opened in the mid-1990s with the Brockworth bypass, takes the A417 for west Gloucester, Cirencester and Swindon. Junction 12 is the one for central and south Gloucester, via the A38. Junction 12's exit slip roads were lengthened in 2002 after queues built back onto the motorway itself, so if you've stopped near it, say if you're on the slip road or the main carriageway.
