Becontree was built between 1921 and 1935 with around 26,000 homes and no provision for parking, because nobody expected tenants to own cars. The plots were too small for garages. The very first houses, in Chittys Lane, still carry a blue council plaque. The A13 crosses the south of Dagenham on a viaduct over the Ford works, opened in 1999, and then runs on a causeway across Rainham Marshes. Room to stop on those raised sections is limited, so if the car loses power, try to reach the next junction. Ford still builds engines here, in the original 1931 plant and the Dagenham Diesel Centre, though with around 2,000 staff against a 1953 peak of about 40,000. Land around it is being rebuilt as Beam Park and Dagenham Green. Dagenham Dock station and the industrial land nearby see a lot of vans and lorries. The A1306 follows the old line of the A13 through the area. If you're unsure which A13 junction you're near, the wind turbines on the Ford site are a useful landmark to mention.

The former May and Baker pharmaceutical site is now Eastbrook Studios, a film and television studio.
