Everything on the west side converges at Junction 21 of the M1. The M69 arrives there from Coventry, the A5460 Narborough Road comes out of the city, the A563 outer ring road connects, and Fosse Shopping Park sits about half a mile away. The stretch between Junctions 21 and 21a, which includes Leicester Forest East services, has a long record of congestion and collisions at peak times. Further north, Junction 21a takes the A46 towards Newark and Junction 22 meets the A50 and A511 for Coalville.
This part of the M1 still has a conventional hard shoulder. If you stop on it, get everyone out through the left-hand doors and wait behind the barrier. Inside the city, the A594 central ring is a harder place to break down than it looks. It is dual carriageway for most of its length, the names change every few hundred yards (Vaughan Way, Burley's Way, Waterloo Way, Infirmary Road) and the southern section splits into a one-way system around the Royal Infirmary and De Montfort University. Highcross has two multi-storeys, the Haymarket Centre has another, and the Royal Infirmary's main multi-storey is entered from Havelock Street. Glenfield Hospital's car parks come off Glenfrith Way and Groby Road; Leicester General's off Coleman Road and Wakerley Road.
The main radial routes are the A6 London Road out through Oadby towards Market Harborough and the A47, which is Hinckley Road on the west side and Uppingham Road on the east. Which direction you were travelling, the last junction you passed, and the number on the nearest blue driver location sign if you can see one safely. Say if you're on the hard shoulder or have made it into Leicester Forest East services. If you're on the hard shoulder, get out by the left-hand doors and wait behind the barrier while you call. If the car has stopped in a live lane and you can't get out safely, stay belted in with your hazards on and call 999 first.
My car is on an upper floor of a city-centre multi-storey. Can a recovery truck reach it?
Usually not inside the building, because a flatbed is too tall for most multi-storey headroom. That's why we ask about the level at the start. If the problem is a flat battery, a jump start or a replacement battery fitted in the bay normally solves it. If the car genuinely has to be taken away, it may need to be moved to ground level first, and it's worth letting the car park office know. Tell us the car park, the level and the fault and we'll plan it properly.
Can you take my car from Leicester to a garage in another town?

If not, stop well to the left, get everyone out by the left-hand doors and wait behind the barrier. The car goes on the truck and the wheel is dealt with away from the M1, at a tyre fitter or a garage you choose.
My battery died on the drive in Wigston. Can you fit a new one there?
Yes, a mobile battery replacement can be fitted on your drive. Send us the registration first so the right battery is sourced, and tell us if the car has stop-start, because that needs an AGM or EFB type. If the car only needs a jump to get going and the battery is fairly new, we'll say so rather than sell you one you don't need.
