The M1 changes character either side of Junction 25. Between Junctions 24 and 25 it is an all-lane-running smart motorway, with no hard shoulder. If the car is failing, aim for an emergency area, and if you stop in a live lane, stay belted in with hazards on and call 999. North of Junction 25, up to Junction 28, the motorway was widened to four lanes each way in 2010 and has variable speed limits, but it keeps a hard shoulder; if you stop there, get out on the left and wait behind the barrier. From Junction 25 the A52, named Brian Clough Way, runs east past Bardill's Island, where the Toton Lane park and ride serves the trams, and into the city at the Priory roundabout. It reaches the Queen's Medical Centre, which sits where the A52 meets the A6514 ring road and the A6200 Derby Road; the main entrance is off Derby Road. The A52 then crosses the Trent on Clifton Bridge, the next crossing upstream from Trent Bridge. Junction 24 brings the A453, a dual carriageway, up from the south into Clifton, and Junction 26 takes the A610 in past Nuthall.
Trams share the road in places. Line 1 runs from Toton Lane to Hucknall and Line 2 from Clifton South to Phoenix Park, running on street through the Clifton Estate and the city centre. A car stopped on the tracks needs dealing with fast; tell us immediately if you're on a tram route.
