Vehicle recovery in Warrington
The M6 crosses the Ship Canal and the Mersey on the Thelwall Viaduct, between Junction 20 (also Junction 9 of the M56) and Junction 21. It is two separate bridges, each well over a kilometre long, high up and exposed, and strong winds regularly bring speed restrictions for high-sided vehicles. There's no easy way off once you're on it. If the car fails on the viaduct, stay as far left as possible with hazards on, and if you're in a live lane and can't get out safely, call 999 first.
North of the viaduct, Junction 21a at Croft is where the M6 meets the M62. From there up to Junction 26 at Orrell, the M6 is a smart motorway: the hard shoulder became an extra lane in the 2021 to 2024 upgrade, with emergency areas along the way. On the M62, Junction 9 takes the A49 into town, Junction 8 serves Burtonwood services and the Gemini shopping area, and Junction 7 meets the A57.
In town, only two main roads cross the Mersey: Warrington Bridge at Bridge Foot and the Kingsway Bridge on the A50. South of the river, three swing bridges and a high-level cantilever bridge carry roads over the Ship Canal, and a passing ship can hold traffic up for a while. If we're coming to you south of the canal, it helps to know which crossing you used.
Time Square's multi-storey runs to eight levels and Golden Square has its own multi-storey. Warrington Hospital is on Lovely Lane. For the Mersey Gateway Bridge between Widnes and Runcorn, only Merseylink may carry out recovery on the bridge itself; they move you to a place of safety and we collect from there. A recovered car can go to a garage in town, back home or anywhere in the country.

I've broken down on the Thelwall Viaduct. What should I do?
Get as far left as you can and put your hazards on. If there's a safe way to get out by the left-hand door and stand behind the barrier, do that. If you're stuck in a live lane and can't get out safely, stay in with your seat belt on and call 999. Then call us with your direction of travel, and we'll arrange recovery once the scene is safe.
Can you recover my car from the Mersey Gateway Bridge?
Not from the bridge itself. The Mersey Gateway byelaws only allow Merseylink to recover or repair vehicles on the bridge, so pull left, put your hazards on and call Merseylink. They'll move you to a place of safety, and then we can collect from wherever you've been left.
The M6 north of Croft has no hard shoulder. Where do I stop?
Between Junctions 21a and 26 the old hard shoulder is a running lane, so aim for one of the emergency areas. If you can't reach one, get as far left as possible and, if it's safe, out behind the barrier. In a live lane with no safe way out, stay belted in and ring 999.
My battery went flat in the Time Square car park. Can you help?
Yes. Tell us which level you're on and where, plus the make and model. A jump start or a battery fitted in the bay is usually the answer, because a flatbed won't fit inside the multi-storey.
