The M60 is 36 miles of orbital motorway, and between Junction 8 at Sale and Junction 18 it is a smart motorway with variable speed limits, fully live since July 2018. That stretch keeps its hard shoulder, but on the M62 from Junction 18 to Junction 20 towards Rochdale the hard shoulder is now a permanent running lane. South of the city, the M56 between Junctions 6 and 8 by the airport was upgraded to a smart motorway in 2023. On any of these, head for an emergency area if you can, and if you're stuck in a live lane stay belted in, hazards on, and call 999.
There are no service areas on the M60 itself, so when you ring us the junction number is the key detail, along with inner or outer carriageway. The blue driver location signs at the roadside give us an exact position.
Closer in, the Mancunian Way (A57(M)) runs as an elevated road across the south of the centre, with junctions for the A5103, the A34 and the A6. On the raised section there's nowhere to pull off, so keep going to the next slip road if the car will make it. The A5103 Princess Road carries traffic out to the M56 at Junction 3.
In town, the tall multi-storeys are common places for a car to refuse to start: NCP Oxford Street, NCP Spinningfields, the Arndale's car park, the Shudehill Interchange car park and the one at Piccadilly station. I've broken down on the M62 near Rochdale. Is there a hard shoulder?
Not between Junctions 18 and 20: the old hard shoulder is a permanent traffic lane there. Get to an emergency area if you can. If the car stops in a running lane, keep your seat belt on, put the hazards on and call 999, then contact us once you're safe with the direction and the nearest junction.
Do I have to pay a clean air zone charge to drive my car home after a repair in Manchester?
No. Greater Manchester dropped the idea of a charging clean air zone, and the government approved a non-charging plan in 2025, so there's no daily charge for private cars anywhere in the city region.
My car's on the seventh floor of a city-centre car park. Can you get it out?
A flatbed can't drive into a multi-storey, so the first job is working out whether it will start. A jump start or a new battery in the bay fixes most of these. If it genuinely has to be carried away, it may need to come down to ground level first, and the car park operator can help. Tell us the car park, level and fault.
