Along the M20, Junction 5 at Aylesford meets the A20, Junction 6 at Sandling takes the A229 into the town and north to Chatham, Junction 7 at Detling is the A249 towards Sheerness and the M2, and Junction 8 at Hollingbourne is the A20 again, with Maidstone Services and the turn for Leeds Castle. West of here, between Junctions 3 and 5, the M20 has been all-lane running since 2020, so the hard shoulder is a running lane. Head for an emergency area or the next exit if the car is failing, and if you stop in a live lane, stay belted in and call 999.

The A229 climbs over Blue Bell Hill to M2 Junction 3, and M2 Junction 5 is reached via the A249. Tell us which motorway you're on, because the M2 and M20 junctions are easy to mix up in a phone call.

Operation Brock is the Kent plan for holding lorries on the M20 when cross-Channel traffic backs up. When it's in place, the coastbound carriageway between Junctions 8 and 9 is used to queue lorries, other traffic runs in a contraflow on the London-bound side with a 50mph limit, and there's no hard shoulder to use. It was deployed over summer 2026 and removed on 16 August. If it's back when you break down, tell us if you're in the contraflow or the lorry queue.

In town, Fremlin Walk on Earl Street has a 760-space car park, and The Mall is on Pads Hill. Maidstone Hospital is on Hermitage Lane at Barming, a busy route between Barming and Aylesford, and the retail park at Aylesford sits at an A20 junction nearby.

A recovered vehicle can go to a garage in Aylesford or Bearsted, your own drive, or a dealer in another county. The price covers the full trip and is agreed before dispatch.

There's no hard shoulder in the contraflow, so if you've stopped in a lane, stay in the car with your belt on and hazards on and call 999. Once the car has been moved clear, call or WhatsApp 07944 820302 and tell us where it has been taken. We'll collect it from there.

Is Operation Brock in place at the moment?

It comes and goes with cross-Channel traffic. The summer 2026 deployment was removed on 16 August 2026. Kent has brought it back before busy periods in the past, so check National Highways travel updates before a long trip on the M20.

My car won’t start at Maidstone Hospital. Can you get to it?

Yes. Tell us which car park at the Hermitage Lane site and a nearby landmark. A jump start or replacement battery can usually be done in the bay.

Can you take my car from Maidstone to a dealer in London?
