The A19 runs north to south just west of the town, and the A19 and A66 meet at a major interchange nearby. To the north, the A19 crosses the river on the Tees Viaduct, a six-lane high-level bridge that carried an average of 112,000 vehicles a day in 2016. Its capacity is exceeded at peak times, and it has CCTV to spot incidents. If you break down on the viaduct, stay well away from the traffic. If you can't get out safely, call 999 before you call us.
The A66 runs east to west through the north of the town centre, partly on an elevated section, and carries on to Grangetown near Redcar. Teesside Park is just off it, near the A19 interchange, on the old Stockton racecourse. It's split between the retail side and the leisure side, with a Showcase cinema and a Hollywood Bowl, and the car parks cover a lot of ground, so tell us which part you're in.
The A174 Parkway is a dual carriageway along the south of the town from the A19 at Thornaby, heading east past Normanby, Ormesby and Eston to Redcar and on down the coast towards Whitby. Its roundabout with the A1053 is a known accident blackspot. James Cook University Hospital is on Marton Road, with visitor car parks reached from the Marton Road entrance at the south end of the site and its own railway station.
Nearer the river, the Riverside Stadium in Middlehaven holds more than 33,000, and the surrounding roads are heavily used on match days. The Transporter Bridge has been out of use since 2019, so it's no way over the river for anyone; the Newport Bridge upstream is still open. A recovered vehicle can go to a garage in Middlesbrough, Stockton or Redcar, back to your home, or to a dealer elsewhere.

Yes. Tell us which car park, roughly where you are in it, and the make and model. A jump start or a new battery fitted in the space usually gets the car going without it needing to be moved.
Can I use the Transporter Bridge to get my car across the river?
No. It has been out of use since 2019 and is waiting for major repairs. If your car needs to go north of the Tees, we'll take it over the A19 or the Newport Bridge.
